What Is a ZEB Heat Battery—and Could It Work in Your Home?

How a ZEB heat battery works
A ZEB is a heat-battery boiler made by Tepeo. In broad terms, it uses electricity to store heat inside the home, then supplies the heating and hot-water system through its installed design and controls. It is not the same as a conventional gas boiler, and it should not be compared with a heat pump as though the two systems operate in the same way.

Pause for deeper assessment where usable internal space is limited, heat demand is high or unknown, radiators and pipework are uncertain, hot-water needs are complex, electrical capacity is unclear or tariff-linked charging is unacceptable. Cost and installation
The installed cost is more than the equipment. Ask for a written scope that separates electrical work, hydraulic work, controls, hot-water changes, radiator or pipework work, access, making good, excluded works and the assumptions behind the quotation. Compare like-for-like scope, not a single headline price.
Running costs
A useful ZEB cost model starts with annual space heating and hot water, then makes the charging mix visible. It should state efficiency, off-peak and peak/top-up rates, standing charges, solar treatment and what it excludes. It should not assume that all electricity is bought at the lowest tariff.
Hot water and existing radiators
Hot-water provision, cylinder arrangement, controls and existing radiators should be designed for the property rather than presumed. Ask what changes are proposed, what temperature and flow assumptions are being used and how the design will be checked after installation.
Smart tariffs and solar
Tariff timing can materially affect a storage-based electricity model. Solar can help in some circumstances, but its timing is not a guaranteed match for winter heat demand. Use the tariff and solar inputs you actually have—or can realistically obtain—when modelling costs.
